Kat Rosenfield

SPECIAL GUEST

Kat Rosenfield

Kat Rosenfield joined Nuance Forum to discuss the #MeToo movement, the issue of consent, and broader themes in the landscape of contemporary sexual relationships.

Rosenfield is a NYT best-selling author, freelance writer and cultural commentator who co-hosts the podcast “Feminine Chaos.” She is the Edgar-nominated author of Amelia Anne Is Dead And Gone (2012) and Inland (2014). A former reporter for MTV News, her work has appeared in outlets including Wired, Vulture, Entertainment Weekly, Playboy, Us Weekly, and TV Guide. She currently appears regularly in online publications Arc Digital, Persuasion and Tablet.

Rosenfield’s recent column “Love Hurts: So let’s stop infantilizing women and demonizing men” appearing in Persuasion, was the springboard to an invigorating and thought-provoking conversation about navigating the thorny realm of heterosexual dating and sexual dynamics.

Rosenfield expanded on the topics covered in her column and engaged deeply with about fifteen conversation partners. A particularly fruitful part of the conversation explored the limitations of consent, although clearly a minimum standard for intimate interactions, but also inadequate to address all the potential pitfalls and heartbreaks of modern dating. Harkening back to her long experience as an advice columnist, Rosenfield was generally skeptical that we’ll ever make dating risk-free or pain-free but pointed out the obvious positive possibilities of finding love and advocated for a more nuanced public discussion about the topic. Rosenfield’s laptop battery began to fail after more than two hours of conversation, and as has become common, the group continued in deep discussion for another hour.

Kat Rosenfield joined Nuance Forum as guest speaker on October 6, 2020.

Love Hurts

“Shock, heartbreak, anger: these are normal things to feel when a romantic relationship goes sour. But today, they’re lumped into the nefarious category of abuse…”
